Meta, The Owner of Facebook, Will Launch Paid Subscriptions

Following Elon Musk’s similar move at Twitter, Facebook and Instagram owner Meta will launch a paid subscription service that allows users to verify their accounts for as little as $11.99 per month. According to Zuckerberg, Meta Verified will enable users to “verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer support.” This week, the service will begin its rollout in Australia and New Zealand.

In a statement that was uploaded to his Facebook account, he wrote, “This new feature is about increasing authenticity and security across our services.” The company stated that accounts on Facebook and Instagram that have already been verified would not be altered, and users over the age of 18 will only be permitted to subscribe. Businesses do not yet have access to the service.

Last year, Musk’s initial attempts to launch a service similar to this one on Twitter, a rival social media network, went horribly wrong. An embarrassing number of fake accounts scared advertisers and raised questions about the site’s future. He had to put the effort on hold for a while before relaunching it in December to mixed reviews.

Meta was punished by investors last year, causing the share price of the company to drop by an astonishing two thirds over the course of a year. However, the stock has made up some of the lost ground in 2023. Zuckerberg has maintained his optimism regarding Meta’s prospects. The company reported its first annual sales decline since going public in 2012 earlier this month, though it was less severe than anticipated. Additionally, the company recently announced that for the first time, Facebook’s daily user base exceeded two billion.
