Gary Neville has suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia because the deal was staggering and hard to resist.

The 37-year-old Portugal international will be getting the biggest football salary in history at more than £177m per year.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s contract was terminated at Manchester United in mid November following his interview with Piers Morgan.

He joined Al Nassr on Friday and Carragher feels it was a sad end to the 37-year-old’s boisterous football career.

Nevile believes that not much of Cristiano Ronaldo would be seen henceforth because of his move to the Arab world.

The Manchester United legend further pointed out that the move proved that Saudi Arabia is now very serious about football for them to invest £350m on just one player.

He also noted that by signing Ronaldo, Saudi Arabia may just win the hosting rights to the 2030 World Cup.

“I thought he would want to stay in one of the big leagues in Europe, for the rest of the season at least,” he told Sky Sports.

“It tell you that the offer is absolutely staggering and maybe another European club that he wanted to join didn’t really come in for him.

“There’s an element of sadness for me because we’re probably seeing the end of Cristiano Ronaldo playing at the top level,” he added.
